How to find English-speaking service providers in Budapest

Living in Budapest without Hungarian is entirely doable, until the boiler dies or you need a dentist on short notice. Then the usual advice is “ask in a Facebook group and hope”. Here is a better system.

Chat first, always

The single best filter for language is not a “speaks English” label but an actual conversation. Message the provider before you book: two sentences tell you immediately whether communication will work. On Frendex every provider can be messaged directly in the app, so you check this in a minute rather than on the doorstep.

Where English is common, and where it is not

Some fields in Budapest are reliably English-friendly: private healthcare, IT and digital services, and most of the creative professions. Trades like plumbing or electrics are more mixed, which is exactly where chat-first checking pays off. A plumber who answers you in clear English exists; you just need a way to find them quickly.

Read reviews for signal, not stars

A profile with reviews from real bookings tells you two things: the work is good, and other customers got through the communication. On Frendex, reviews can only come from completed bookings, so a strong English-language review on a profile is a double signal.

Agree on price in writing

This is good advice in any language, and essential across a language barrier. Settle the price, the scope and the time in chat. If anything is disputed later, the conversation is right there in the app, in writing you both understood.

Emergencies: availability beats vocabulary

With a burst pipe, your priority is who can come now. The Frendex map shows available providers near you in real time; between the map pins, the ratings and a quick message, you can sort out an emergency without a single phone call in Hungarian.
