Booking local services in Budapest: a newcomer's guide

Every city has unwritten rules about hiring help. Budapest is no exception. Here is what newcomers usually learn the hard way, condensed.

Prices are individual, so compare

Hungarian service prices vary widely between providers, and there is no universal rate card. The practical approach: compare a few profiles before booking. On Frendex providers publish their services and prices on their profiles, which makes comparison a two-minute job instead of ten phone calls. Browse the full directory to get a feel for a category.

Booking culture: chat beats calling

Hungarians increasingly prefer written arrangements for services, and it works in your favor: a chat thread records the price, the scope and the time you agreed. If you only remember one thing from this guide, make it this: get the arrangement in writing, every time.

The “kiszállási díj” (call-out fee)

Trades often charge a call-out fee for coming to you, sometimes deducted from the final bill if you go ahead with the work. It is normal; just confirm it up front so the final number is no surprise.

Tipping

Tipping for trades and home services is not expected the way it is in restaurants. Rounding up for excellent work is appreciated but entirely optional. For beauty services (hairdressers, nail technicians), a roughly 10% tip is customary if you are happy.

Reviews carry real weight

The Budapest service market runs on reputation. Leave honest reviews after your bookings: they help the good providers grow and they are the reason the next newcomer has an easier time than you did. On Frendex, every review comes from a real booking, so the system stays honest.
