Education and coaching guides

Tutoring, language teachers and coaching near you: how to find someone who fits, and how long it usually takes to see real progress.

A good teacher and a good tutor are not the same thing, and neither becomes good simply by having done it for years. What matters is the fit with your child, or with your own goal.

These guides cover choosing well, what realistic progress looks like, and how hourly rates are set, so you do not spend six months finding out it was never going to work.

Frequently asked questions

How long before I see results?

With tutoring, six to eight sessions is where change becomes measurable, provided the student also works in between. For a language at two hours a week, a full level takes somewhere between six months and a year. Anyone promising a dramatic jump in two weeks is either correcting a bad initial assessment or overselling.

Group lessons or one to one?

One to one is for closing a specific gap, or for a student who will not speak up in a group. For languages a small group is often better, because you have to talk in it, and it costs less. The two combine well: a group for routine, a few private lessons for the weak spots.

What should I ask for before the first lesson?

A short assessment, and then one sentence on what you will be working on. If the teacher cannot name something specific after the first lesson, they will not after the next twenty either.
